Soundtrack to the future: The Red River Cultural District’s 5+ Year Strategic Plan is a guide to what comes next. Developed with input from businesses, property owners, musicians, creatives, community partners, and more, this plan identifies the priorities, goals, and strategies that will help shape the District in the years ahead. It serves as a roadmap for decision-making, strategic partnerships, financial planning, policy advocacy, and investments that support the long-term sustainability of Red River. We believe music is the soul of this city and with this plan, along with the continued collaboration of our community, we’ll work to preserve Austin’s title as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” starting right here on “Austin’s Music Mile.”
Why This Plan Matters
Red River has long been a cornerstone of Austin’s live music and creative culture. As the city continues to grow and evolve, it’s more important than ever to support the venues, artists, and independent businesses that make this district unique. This strategic plan provides a shared vision for protecting and strengthening the cultural and economic ecosystem of Red River. By aligning our efforts around clear priorities, we can ensure the District remains a thriving destination for live music, nightlife, and creative expression for years to come.
How the Plan Was Developed
The Red River Cultural District Strategic Plan was shaped through collaboration and community input. Over the course of the planning process, we gathered insights from venue owners, musicians, creative workers, property owners, neighborhood stakeholders, and city partners. This feedback – combined with economic analysis and research – helped identify the challenges and opportunities facing the District today and informed the strategies that will guide our work moving forward.
Key Strategic Priorities
The Strategic Plan outlines several key focus areas that will guide the work of the Red River Cultural District over the next five years:
- Strengthening the Live Music Ecosystem – Supporting venues, artists, and industry professionals who make Red River Austin’s most vibrant hub for live music.

- Economic Vitality and Sustainability – Ensuring the long-term success of local businesses through advocacy, resources, and strategic investment.
